Welcome to Stanford University’s Learning Design Challenge!

Stanford University is known for its flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystem, while the Graduate School of Education and Stanford Accelerator for Learning are recognized for their deep focus on inclusion and accessibility. These core commitments come together in the Learning Design Challenge, where teams of students from across campus develop inclusive and accessible learning solutions through innovation and entrepreneurship.

Why Participate in the Learning Design Challenge?

Learn, build, and network in a front-to-back program.

Bring an existing idea or develop a new idea. Bring a team or build a team. Some join the Learning Design Challenge with a project and team in place. Others with a problem they'd like to solve. Others come to investigate new ways to use design and technology to promote human development. In this video, learn about WeStride, which started as a class project pitched by Chawin Asavasaetakul and Gabby Tan, and has developed into a rapidly growing Southeast Asian EdTech company.

Our for-credit courses are designed to build your skills and develop your networks, like this 2-hour workshop with the AI in education team from Khan Academy. Workshops focus on human-centered design, the learning sciences, AI in education, game design, team building, fundraising, inclusion, and technical implementation, along with how to sustain your project as a for-profit start-up, non-profit start-up, social enterprise, and/or academic research project.

The Learning Design Challenge, Stanford Accelerator for Learning, and collaborators like StartX provide students with opportunities to earn design awards and scholarships as they work through processes of ideation, prototyping, design sprints, and project development. In Winter Quarter, students pitch for the program’s $1,500 Prototyping Awards and in Spring Quarter our $9,000 Research-to-Practice Awards. Students work with StartX and apply for the Student-in-Residence (SIR) scholarship.
